MSIT to Hold the Korea-OECD CSTP Workshop from Sep 20 to 21 (September 17)
- Korea and OECD join hands to strengthen linkage between STI and ODA
□ The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) held the ‘Korea-OECD CSTP Workshop’ in cooperation with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) from 20 to 21 September in an effort to strengthen linkage between science, technology and innovation (STI) and ODA.
ㅇ Since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, STI has been perceived as the key to addressing Grand Challenges, such as building sustainable cities, tackling climate change and preserving biological diversity.
ㅇ Development cooperation and using STI to address grand challenges are policy trends that are gaining global traction, and linkage between STI and ODA has been viewed critical to the successful implementation of SDGs.
ㅇ There has also been stronger demand from developing countries to accumulate STI capabilities and pursue socioeconomic development, and for many, Korea is considered an optimal model to follow.
□ Since Korea joined the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) in 2010, Korea’s ODA has continuously grown, with STI plying an increasingly important role in various projects.
ㅇ The Seoul Workshop is held to strengthen cooperation with international organizations and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Korea’s STI ODA.
ㅇ The workshop will be attended by experts from related ministries, affiliated institutions, academia, corporations and NGOs to discuss STI agendas, its connection with ODA policies, R&D and innovation measurement, and the role of cutting-edge technology in ODA.
□ Director General of International Cooperation Kyung Hee Song stated that the workshop will “make Korea’s advanced STI ODA policies internationally known” and that “Korea will expand its STI diplomacy by strengthening its global network.”
