Minister of Science and ICT You Young-min attended Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 and visited the exhibition booths of Samsung Electronics, SKT, KT, LG, Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, and Huawei to find out the latest trends of the mobile industry and checked on the preparations for the launch of commercial 5G network in April.

Minister You offered words of encouragement to Korean communication companies and equipment makers that put great efforts to launch the world’s first commercial 5G network, as was announced at MWC 2018. Minister You also visited global pavilions to check on the global trend of the 5G industry.

In particular, on the first day (February 25), Minister You looked around the booths of Korea’s major tech businesses with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria, taking a look at newly unveiled 5G handsets and experiencing 5G-enabled VR services.

Minister You encouraged Korean SMEs and startups while visiting Korean pavilions on February 26 and 27, saying that the best communication infrastructure of 5G and the ideas and passion of industry professionals will be converged to pave the way for Korea to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

On February 26, Minister You signed an MoU with the GSMA, the organizer of MWC events, to promote 5G convergence services for the first time.

The newly signed MoU lays the foundation for Korea to take the lead not only in commercial 5G networks but also in 5G-enabled services.

Meanwhile, Minister You actively pursued diplomatic activities in the field of latest ICT by holding bilateral talks with the United States, Spain, and the World Bank on the sidelines of MWC.

Minister You met with FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and shared the 5G strategies of Korea and the United States and promised to expand cooperation in the fields of 5G commercialization and cyber security.

Minister You congratulated the successful opening of MWC 2019 during the meeting with Spanish Minister of Industry, Trade, and Tourism Reyes Maroto, who highly assessed Korea’s 5G commercialization and invited Korea as a country of honor to “Industria Conectada 4.0 (Connectd Industry 4.0)” to be held in Madrid in November, to share Korea’s experience in the field.

Meanwhile, during the meeting with Minister You, World Bank Vice President Makhtar Diop assessed that the DNA policy of the MSIT is exemplary to others and introduced the Digital Moonshot policy, which supports investment in Africa’s communication networks and human resources development, requesting Korea’s coordination in its implementation.

“Many Korean companies have made great efforts to launch the world’s first 5G networks as we announced the plan here at MWC 2018. I could see the hard work of not only Korean companies but all businesses around the world for 5G technologies,” said Minister You at MWC 2019.

Minister You emphasized that continuous efforts are needed such as discovering various 5G-enabled services for Korea to maintain its industrial leadership in 5G.
