MSIT to strengthen 5G and space cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Communication of Turkmenistan (April 18)

- Ministerial Meeting between the MSIT and the MIC

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it had a ministerial meeting with the Ministry of Industry and Communication of Turkmenistan (Minister Durhanov Tahyrberdi) at Oguzkent Hotel in Ashgabat, where it shared Korea’s experience of launching the world’s first commercial 5G and developing satellites and agreed to contribute to Turkmenistan’s communications and space development.

This meeting, which was held on May 17, was a follow-up of the ICT MOU signed at the Turkmen presidential office by both ministers in the presence of the presidents of Korea and Turkmenistan.

Minister Young Min You explained that Korea is promoting the development and application of technologies related to data, network and artificial intelligence, which are key to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, with I-Korea Strategy.

He also highlighted the importance of policy sharing and cooperation in the era of digital transformation, as the best partner of Digital Economy Concept* carried out by Turkmenistan.

* A 2019-2025 strategy approved by a presidential decree in November 2018, which is aimed at improving the effectiveness of the Turkmenistan economy and public sector.

He went onto introducing Korea’s experience of launching the world’s first commercial 5G services on April 3 (Wed), which was made possible by smooth implementation of policies such as 5G spectrum auction in last June.

He also asked for Turkmenistan’s interest in Korean companies with world-class 5G capabilities so that they can contribute to the Turkmenistan Network Enhancement Project (TNEP)*.

* Turkmenistan Network Enhancement Project (TNEP)

(Objective) Enhance the national network of Turkmenistan to 4G/5G

(Scale) A project with a budget of USD 273 million (about KRW 300 billion), funded by the Islamic Development Bank(IDB)

Minister You also discussed cooperating with the MIC in space satellite development.

He underscored that Korea has successfully developed 15 satellites so far and cooperated with foreign countries in satellite development.

He said that he wanted to explore possible areas of cooperation* among both countries’ related organizations and companies to vitalize bilateral cooperation and create fruitful outcomes.

* Turkmenistan has one communications satellite and is planning to develop new remote sensing satellite.

Minister You said, “Turkmenistan was at the heart of the Silk Road, full of economic potentials. 5G and space cooperation with Turkmenistan will serve as an important stepping stone to Korean companies’ entry to Central Asia.

He added, “I hope today’s meeting promotes cooperation not only in communications and satellite cooperation between the two countries but also in talent fostering.”
