Korea and Russia to Strengthen Science and Technology Cooperation in Response to Fourth Industrial Revolution (May 17)

The MSIT held the 13th Korea-Russia Joint Committee Meeting on Science and Technology Cooperation* (hereafter referred to as the "JCM") on the afternoon of May 16, and held the 3rd Korea-Russia Science and Technology Day** on the morning of May 17, local time.

The JCM and Korea-Russia Science and Technology Day were held to carry out the joint response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and to expand commercialization projects of cutting-edge technologies agreed during the summit last June, and also to lay out substantial and concrete cooperation projects.

The 13th Korea-Russia JCM on Science and Technology Cooperation

At the 13th JCM on May 16, Korea and Russia agreed to expand cutting-edge science and technology cooperation to respond to the Fourth Industrial revolution and to promote a variety of projects to take bilateral cooperation in science and technology to the next level-for example, strengthening cooperation in basic science, science and technology policies, and cooperation between research institutions.

The two sides agreed to expand cooperation in developing and commercializing technologies in AI, high-functional UAVs for aerial and offshore missions, life science of developing anti-cancer immunotherapy, and quantum communications which are key drivers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The two sides also agreed to diversify and intensify basic science cooperation by conducting joint research and talent cultivation in theoretical physics, next-generation space telescope development and joint observation, and research on environmental changes in the Arctic. The cooperation between Korea's NST and Russia's RAS will further be strengthened.

Korea and Russia will push ahead with new joint research projects from 2020 to support researchers in both countries in a variety of areas.

The 3rd Korea-Russia Science and Technology Day

The 3rd Korea-Russia Science and Technology Day was held in the headquarters of the RAS on May 17.

This year's event was jointly hosted by Korea's NST and Russia's RAS, expected to provide an opportunity to expand exchanges and cooperation between the research institutes from both countries.

The event brought together about 40 speakers who are experts in AI, bioengineering, and advanced materials, the key areas of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and about 200 professionals from Russian universities and research institutes to share their research outcomes and to explore substantial cooperation methods between researchers.

First Vice Minister Mun Mi-ock of Science and ICT said, "The JCM and Science and Technology Day will further enhance our cooperation to jointly respond to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. We will provide active support for innovation-led growth by implementing the New Northern Policy, which includes Korea-Russia science and technology cooperation."
