ASEAN, as Korea's dialogue partner, has been holding ASEAN TELMIN plus Korea since 2006. At the 14th edition of TELMIN plus Korea this year, delegates from the ASEAN Secretariat and ministers and vice ministers from the ten ASEAN Members* gathered to propose and endorse ICT cooperation agendas for 2019 and 2020. They also discussed potential areas of cooperation for the coming years.

This year's meeting is particularly meaningful as 2019 marks the 30th anniversary of Korea and ASEAN's relationship as dialogue partners. In addition, the meeting also serves as a prelude to the 2019 ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit (Nov 25-26, Busan, BEXCO), reconfirming the close strategic partnership between Korea and ASEAN Members in the ICT sector.

This year’s meeting, held a month before the ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit scheduled at the end of November, will provide an opportunity to look back on the 30 years of progress in ASEAN-Korea ICT cooperation and seek a future direction for the next 30 years to realize the goal of “Partnership for Peace, Prosperity for People” with ICT cooperation.

The MSIT announced that Korea and ASEAN agreed to strengthen their cooperation to share the benefits of the development of ICT, such as 5G, AI and data, as close partners in the journey towards digital innovation and shared prosperity.

The 2019 ASEAN-Korea ICT Work plan, which reflects the commitment of Korea and ASEAN, was proposed at the meeting; Korea and ASEAN agreed on and approved the Work plan through the 14th ASEAN-Korea Joint Media Statement.

Minister Choi brought ASEAN countries’ attention to the upcoming 2019 ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit, underlining that the meeting will allow them to foster an inclusive digital ecosystem where they can all develop together through continuous cooperation.

Ministers and vice ministers of ASEAN Members, including Malaysia, Thailand and Brunei, expressed their appreciation to Korea for sharing its policies and experience in key ICT such as 5G and AI and promised to join Korea in realizing a digital innovation by strengthening ICT cooperation with Korea on the occasion of the 30 years of ASEAN-Korea relations.

Minister Choi also had bilateral meetings with ministers of Lao PDR and Brunei and deputy minister of Vietnam. Minister Choi and his counterparts agreed to expand ICT partnership based on the ICT MoUs signed during President Moon Jae-in's state visits and to find more concrete cooperation opportunities related to their areas of common interest, such as 5G, cybersecurity and IT talent cultivation.
