MSIT Holds the First ICT Forum with Russia (Oct 21)

- Both discussed ICT policies of Korea and Russia and agree to strengthen cooperation in 5G services and AI talent development

The MSIT held the first Korea-Russia ICT Forum with the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation in Skolkovo, Russia on October 21.

This Forum is based on the Korea-Russia ICT Cooperation MoU signed by the Korean and Russian Presidents in June 2018, in order to promote networking in ICT and to broaden and deepen the understanding among Korean and Russian universities, research institutes and companies in the field of ICT.

Led by Director of the International Cooperation Bureau, the Korean delegation included around 20 professionals from the government, universities, research institutes, and businesses. The Russian delegation was led by Deputy Minister Mikhail Mamonov and included around 30 professionals in the field.

As the Forum was the first ICT event with Russia, both sides introduced major ICT polices of each other and 25 speakers gave presentations on 5G mobile services and AI talent development, which are both countries’ key areas of interest.

Planning to roll out commercial 5G services next year, Russia expressed a deep interest in Korea’s successful launch and its willingness to cooperate to develop related technologies and content.

Also, since AI is regarded as a key technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Russia showed great interest in Korea’s progress in AI talent cultivation such as AI graduate schools. The Forum was also meaningful for the Korean side, as it provided opportunities to Russia’s AI and various software technologies, which are relatively less familiar to Koreans.

Both sides proposed ICT cooperation plans based on the Korea-Russia Innovation Platform and agreed to pursue joint technology development and support corporate exchanges and Korean businesses’ entry into the Russian market.

* A framework to support technology cooperation and commercialization with Russia and to support expansion of Korean businesses in Russia, involving the MSIT, Presidential Committee on Northern Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, and Ministry of SMEs and Startups, using the Korea-Russia Science and Technology Cooperation Center in Russia and Korea-Russia Innovation Center in Korea as cooperation hubs

Skolkovo, the venue of the Forum, is an innovation cluster established by Russia to advance its industries. The Open Innovation Forum, the largest of its kind in Russia, is being held and Korea will participate in this Forum as the guest of honor.

MSIT International Cooperation Bureau Director Song Kyung-hee said, “The ICT Forum, part of the Korea-Russia Innovation Platform, provided a valuable opportunity to promote the excellence and innovative features of Korea’s ICT technologies and to pursue international cooperation in exporting Korea’s 5G services and AI talent development.”

Meanwhile, the ICT Business Partnership event will be held in Moscow on the afternoon of October 22 for Korean businesses’ entry in Russian and the East-European bloc market.

25 Korean companies in ICT and content industries and some 100 local buyers will participate in the event, and technology demonstrations, buyer meetings and investor presentations will be held.
