TTA and GCF to Sign MoU on IoT Certification Program Development (February 26)

- Launch market for domestic IoT products and services in 63 countries

The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that a MoU was signed on February 26 between Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) and Global Certification Forum (General Manager Lars Nielsen) on developing global certification solution for global Internet of Things (IoT) standards.

* Global Certification Forum (GCF): an agency which operates certification programs on mobile communication technologies, with globally certified interoperability such as 5G and NB-IoT

This MoU was signed on the occasion of Mobile World Congress 2019 held in Barcelona, Spain, which is the world’s largest mobile exhibition, with the presence of TTA President Park Jae-moon and General Manager Lars Nielsen of GCF.

The two institutions agreed to jointly carry out development, operation and promotion of certification programs for expanding the scope of oneM2M* platform standard.

* oneM2M: IoT service platform development technologies which regional standard development institutions of 8 countries (Korea: TTA, Europe, North America, China, Japan, India etc.) are jointly developing

With the signing of MoU, oneM2M platform standard of the TTA will be connected to IoT network certification program of GCF to lay the groundwork for interoperability of IoT network and platform technologies.

The MSIT and the TTA will verify compatibility and interoperability with the GCF certification program of oneM2M platform standard at the global IoT test and certification center* which is currently being established and operated under the MoU and launch certification program from April this year.

* global IoT test and certification center (set up in Nov. 2017): globally recognized IoT test and certification agency in the fields of IoT service, platform, network and devices

When the certification program is launched, it is possible to verify interoperability in Korea between oneM2M-based IoT products and services and IoT network used by 133 global telecom operators in 63 countries.

IoT products and services that have been certified under GCF network certification program can be used in IoT network of telecom operators who have joined the GCF.

Thanks to this, IoT products and services developed in foreign countries by domestic small and medium sized-enterprises will be able to enter overseas markets easily, without going through separate GCF certification procedures.

The MSIT stated that “support for globally recognized test verification will be increased so that promising domestic IoT SMEs can lead overseas IoT market without having to worry about complex overseas certification procedures and cost. We will also actively support domestic IoT products and services go global through measures such as hosting of overseas IoT roadshow.”
