RRA to make Korea's 5G+ strategy ITU's global standard (Sep 4)

- RRA encourages 193 ITU members to participate in research to facilitate 5G services

Korea's National Radio Research Agency (RRA) announced that a new ITU research question was adopted to facilitate 5G vertical research led by Korea during the ITU-R SG5 meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland from September 2 to 3.

(1) The Study Group 5 (SG5) of the ITU Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) is an official standardization agency under the UN in charge of standardization of terrestrial services including telecommunications, and will complete the technology standard for wireless 5G by 2020.

(2) 5G vertical research: standardization research to provide various services for industry sectors using 5G technology that connect all objects such as cars, home appliances and factory equipment. Korea is carrying out 5G+ strategy

(5G+) Creating new leading industries and services through 5G-based intelligent innovation

Korea proposed the necessity to establish the ITU standard for 5G vertical applications by hosting the meeting of the WP5D(3) under the SG5 in January 2018 for the first time in the world, and led the way in adopting the proposal during the WP5D meeting by inducing the agreement of ITU members and industries.

(3) Working Party 5D (WP5D) is a working group responsible for 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies and international standardization of frequencies.

(4) Choi Hyoungjin from Samsung Electronics was the chair of the WP5D.

- Korea solidified its position as the 5G powerhouse by proposing the world's first commercial 5G technology as the ITU's global standard and by leading the way in 5G applications.

The RRA said "ITU standardization in technology, services, and frequencies for 5G vertical sectors such as autonomous cars, smart factories, and smart cities based on 5G, key infrastructure of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is very meaningful in itself but also carries significance to lay the foundation for Korea's global cooperation of pursuing 5G+ Strategy to achieve innovation-led growth. We will continue to enhance our capabilities as the 5G leader to pave the way for 5G technology and services, leading 5G+, as the ITU question was adopted.“
